Gaston BUSSIERE

*
Gaston Bussière (1862-1928) was a French painter and illustrator. He was born at Cuisery (Saône-et-Loire). He studied under Cabanel and Puvis de Chavannes at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Under the influence of Puvis, Gaston Bussière became friends with Gustave Moreau and Jean-Paul Laurens, and thereafter allied himself with the Symbolists.

*
Bussière's first prints were lithographs, but he soon turned to etching and engraving. Gaston Bussière's most famous lithograph, "Brunehild", published by L'Estampe Moderne in 1899, was later reworked as an etching in 1901 and as an engraving in 1903; it reflects the artist's passion for the operas of Wagner.

Around 1905 Gaston Bussière settled in the artistic colony of Cerez-sur-Loing, and gradually abandoned his mythological and symbolist concerns in favour of pastoral subjects.
